Large Splint Gathering or Laundry Basket
An exceptional American circa late 1800s to early 1900s large splint basket. What struck me about this basket is it's elegant form despite its outsized presence. It is more elliptical than perfectly circular. The wide open top tapers gracefully into a base half its diameter, which gives it the appearance over almost spilling outward. The two perfectly proportioned hand carved side handles go about 3/4 of the way down the body of the basket until they taper off. The "pinwheel" base bumps up in the interior and features an usual braiding around the exterior. It was sold to me as possibly made from black ash.
